Your test covers

Material thickness
3–20 mm
  • A butt weld test does not cover fillet welds and the other way round.
  • A harder position also covers easier ones, for example PF covers PA. The exact table is in the standard.
  • A basic (B) electrode covers every covering except cellulosic (C).

Values as publicly cited from ISO 9606-1:2012. The full standard is licensed and the examining body decides.

What the examiner checks

  1. Visual testing (ISO 17637) of the whole weld, both toes and the root where it can be seen.
  2. Butt welds then go to radiography or bend or fracture tests.
  3. Fillet welds go to a fracture test or at least two macro sections.
  4. Imperfections are judged by ISO 5817 level B; a few may be at level C.

How long it is valid

  • Every 6 months someone confirms that you welded within the range without a break longer than 6 months.
  • Then one of three: a new test every 3 years, two production welds tested every 2 years, or ongoing validity in a company with ISO 3834-2 or -3.
  • Which one applies is chosen when the certificate is issued.
